Winter’s out, Spring’s in. Easter’s Hope Returns

Living in Michigan you already know that spring does not arrive quietly. One day the kids are building snowmen and sliding across the yard in boots; the next day they are stomping around puddles and at the same time hearing robins sing. Then, just to keep us humble another snowflake drifts down as if winter forgot something.

For children, winter can feel magical. Snow days. Sled rides. Hot chocolate with marshmallows. For some of our older friends, winter can feel long and slippery. Careful steps on icy sidewalks. Quiet days indoors. A little more isolation than we would like. Michigan weather changes for all of us, but so do our seasons of life. The good news?  God is present in every season.

In the very first pages of the Bible we read in Genesis that “seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter… shall not cease.” God built rhythm into creation. Winter does not last forever. Spring always follows. Spring is God’s gentle reminder that new life is never far away.

Children, many times, see it first. They notice the tiny green shoots poking through the soil. They splash in rain puddles without worrying about muddy shoes. They remind us that joy is meant to be jumped into. But spring speaks to older hearts too. The ice melts. The days stretch longer. The sidewalks grow safer. Neighbors begin to wave again across fences instead of through frosty windows. Even aching joints seem to loosen in the warmer sun.

There is wisdom for all of us in Ecclesiastes: “To everything there is a season.” That means slippery seasons, quiet seasons, playful seasons, and blooming seasons. None of them are wasted in God’s hands. Maybe this spring is inviting you to something new like reaching out to someone who felt isolated during the winter months. And perhaps that is the greatest comfort of all: the same God who brings green leaves back to bare trees can bring hope back to tired hearts.

So whether you are racing outside in sneakers or carefully testing the wet and icy pavement with your cane, remember this changing Michigan weather is preaching a sermon of its own. Winter had its say. Spring has arrived. And God is faithful in them both.

EASTER, HE HAS RISEN INDEED!

Closing Prayer Risen Lord, As the snow melts and the first green shoots press through Michigan soil, we thank You for the promise of spring. In a world that shifts from sunshine to snow in a single afternoon, You remain steady and faithful. This season reminds us of something even greater than warmer days, it reminds us of Easter. Just as You raised Jesus from the tomb, make our lives signs of Easter hope blooming with kindness, patience, and trust.   In every changing season, and especially in this bright springtime of resurrection, we rejoice in Your life-giving love. Amen
